Annie Stromquist Statement

My artistic practice is a continuing exploration of the relationship between forms and space. The arena of this exploration is paper, on which I work with a variety of drawing, painting, and printmaking techniques. The images I create usually appear to be abstract and quite simple, with empty space used as an active presence. The scale of my work, which is often quite small, reflects my desire to create images whose evocative power unfolds within an intimate viewing context. I consider my works’ significance to reside largely in the poetic potential of physical objects created from ink and paper, rather than in any symbolic associations.

Minimalism and certain aspects of Japanese art have greatly influenced my pursuit of simplicity in form and flatness of space. Chance is also a central interest in my work. I am most engaged in methods employing an element of unpredictability, such as the interaction of ink and water on wet paper. When an eloquent form emerges from a process that is, in equal measures, controlled and fortuitous, it conveys the essence of the revelatory of which art is uniquely expressive.
